Bharat Ratna


The highest – Civilian award is given for exceptional service the advancement of art, literature and science, and in reconnition of public service of the highest order. The decoration is in the form of a peepal leaf, about 5.8 cm long, 4.7 cm wide and 3.1 mm thick. It is the toned bronze. On its obserse is embossed a replica of the sun, 1.6 cm in diameter, below which the words “Bharat Ratna” are embossed in Hindi. On the reverse are State emblem and the motto, also in Hindi. The emblem, the sun and the rim are of platinum. The inscriptions are in burnished bronze.
  1. The first three recipients of Bharat Ratna were C.Rajagopalchari, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan and Dr. C.V. Raman in 1954
  2. There is no formal provision that recipients of Bharat Ratna should be India citizens. It has been award to a naturalised India citizen, “Mother Teresa” in 1980 and to two non Indians Khan Abdul Ghaffer Khan of pakistan in 1987 and former African president “ Nelson Mandela” in 1990.
  3. Sachin Tendulkar at the age of 40, became youngest person and first sports to receive the honor.
  4. The award was briefly suspended twice in its history.The first suspension occurred after Morarji Desai was sworn in as the four primeminister of India in 1977 and Suspension was rescinded on 1980 after Indira Gandhi again became the prime minister.
